This was written as an ode to the floods that Mumbai witnessed on 26/7/2005.
It was nature's fury that rocked Mumbai and Mumbaikars.
That day is still remembered with dread.
Mumbai, the island city, got a bolt from the blue-
Heavy rains caught her unawares,it was a disaster true!
While MET had predicted" a few scattered showers"
Mumbai faced torrential rains for 24 long hours.
It all began on that terrible Tuesday of 26/7
Along with high tide came 94 cms of rain from heaven,
The commercial capital of India;submerged in the deluge,
Loss to life and property was unprecedented and huge!
Buses, cars and autos-all ran out of steam,
Airports had runways like an over-flowing stream.
Both the main expressways were for 18 hours closed,
While the three railway lines in their watery graves dozed.
With landslides at Sakinaka and many areas flooded,
people faced hardships towards home as they treaded.
School kids and office-goers were stranded in the rain,
Alas!Unfortunate ones were never to be seen again!
The city's good samaritans then came to the fore,
With food, shelter and support, they helped like never before.
The BMC,police and politicians;played the blame game,
While the fire brigade and army jawans to the rescue came.
Nature had fought back against man's greed for space,
Rivers and lakes overflowed, clogged drains worsened the case.
ut with Mumbai's indomitable spirit of never say die,
She slowly recovered dreading the aftermath that did lie.
